CREATING ART
CREATING Making art. How does it happen? A spark of thought, a word or gesture, the quality of the light, a shape, texture or colour, an emotion, a dream. For an artist, there is often no telling where the next irrevocable urge, to create something to represent how that inspiration impacts on us, will come from. Notes and simple scratched sketches are made on any available scrap of paper, a napkin, a hand, table, book, whatever is available. Colour references may be noted. Descriptions of light quality, angle, placement of objects. Each creator has their own personal shorthand. Sometimes the urge is so strong that brush meets canvas almost immediately. More often there are notebooks, folders, boxes, baskets, drawers, filled with paper scraps, napkins, old envelopes, notes, comments, references, sketches. Treasures for that next painting, and the next, and the next, etc. So many possibilities all clamouring to come to life. Time. Far too little. The hovering presence of ‘everyday’ life. Distractions. Life. Love. Responsibilities. How to find enough time to resurrect all those dusty, hidden and oft forgotten treasures that held so much passion when conceived? Place. Never enough space. To work on all these treasures. Spread them out, give them air to breathe, freedom to develop in their own time. Move from one to the other as they call for actualization. Reason. Beyond. No quelling the urge, the drive, the straining and absolute compulsion to create. To bring into the light those sparks. To share the infinite wisdom they hold for those they are meant for. Trusting. Knowing that at the perfect intersection of space and time these images, these objects, these sparks brought to life will meet those for whom they were meant. Forgetting. About ego, self, material gain. Remembering an old spark. Digging through old notes, old scraps, boxes, drawers. Finding that spark. Feeling it again. Brushes, paint, clay, wheel. Process. Creating. A new reality. A new convergence of inspiration, materials, colour, technical ability, elusive talent, experience, emotions. And a new inspiration is born. RJJ 2008
