EDIBLE & MEDICINAL PLANT – WILD PANSY

EDIBLE & MEDICINAL PLANT – WILD PANSY

"There's pansies, that's for thoughts" – Ophelia, in Shakespeare's ‘HAMLET’

Plant Family: Violaceae, viola tricolour

In the Victorian Language of Flowers viola meant thoughts. Hence Ophelia’s statement in Hamlet.

The name pansy came from the French word for thought, pensee. The flower was believed to sooth a lovers thoughts of loneliness when they were separated from their sweetheart. So arose another common name ‘Heartsease’. Another very common name is Johnny Jump Ups. This came about in response to this plants habit of seemly jumping up in the garden at will, anywhere it likes.

Violas were a native wild flower in Europe. As with many other species, they were carried to North America where they naturalized and now grow almost everywhere. Cultivated pansies derive from violas.

Violas, or wild pansies, are a small plant which grows to 6 inches tall. The leaves are very small and spoon shaped with scalloped edges. Blossoms are usually a combination of purple, white and yellow tiny little pansies.

MEDICINAL USES:

Common herbal uses of viola are as a remedy for acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
It has been used to treat epilepsy and since it has expectorant properties it has also been a remedy for asthma, bronchitis and whooping cough. The diuretic qualities of this tiny plant lead to its use as a treatment for bladder problems.

Consult a professional before using for medicinal purposes.

CULINARY USES:

Immerse blossoms in cool water to flush out any tiny insects, and dry thoroughly in a salad spinner. Store them loosely wrapped in a paper towel placed in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.

Add to field greens or use as a garnish for desserts.

The leaves can be cooked like spinach and eaten.

OTHER USES:

Viola blossoms can be used to make yellow, green and blue-green dyes.
