MEDICINAL PLANTS - COMMON MULLEIN

Common Mullein can be found on roadsides, disturbed ground, grassy banks or anywhere there are chalky or gravely soils.

It is native to Europe & temperate Asia. It was brought to North America and became naturalized.

The thick rigid stalk grows up to 6ft tall from a basal rosette of very large, soft, fuzzy leaves. Smaller leaves grow wrapped on the stalk to the top where the flower ear develops small, five-petaled yellow blossoms.

The plant goes by many country names such as Torches, Donkey's Ears, Candlewick Plant and Hag's Tapers. Historically the plants stalks were dipped in tallow and used as torches. The down on the leaves and stems was used to make wicks for candles. This plant has also been used for medicinal and protective purposes over the ages.

Mullein leaves have been used to ameliorate lung complaints. The flowers have been used to make a sedative tea and an olive oil infusion that eases earache pain. The flowers also make a yellow dye.

Confirm medicinal uses with a qualified practitioner prior to use
